As my trip in Rome comes to an end, it would be unfair not to talk about my journey in Vatican in which I’m mesmerized like I’m under a spell at every turn
Although Vatican is the world’s smallest country, it’s home to the Pope who is the spiritual leader of nearly a billion Catholics and also artworks of great artists such as Michelangelo, Raffaelo, Caravaggio and Bernini who directed the world of art. Visiting this country which is smaller than a half square kilometers and surrounded by high walls is a quite exciting experience whether you are religious or not.

Vatikan dünyanın en küçük ülkesi olmasına rağmen neredeyse bir milyar katolik’in ruhani lideri olan papa’ya ve aynı zamanda sanata yön veren Michelangelo, Raffaello, Caravaggio, Bernini gibi dev ustaların sanat eserlerine ev sahipliği yaptığı etrafı yüksek duvarlarla çevrili olan bu yarım km2’den daha küçük ülkeyi ziyaret etmek için ister inançlı olun ister inançsız, son derece heyecan verici bir deneyimdir.
When you enter Vatican, you are welcomed by Piazza San Pietro (Saint Peter Square) which is designed by Bernini and is one of the most exciting architectural structures in the world. Bernini completed this square which has 284 travertine columns, 88 engaged columns and 140 statues of saints in 11 years between 1656 and 1667.

Vatikan’a girdiğiniz zaman sizi Bernini tarafından tasarlanan ve dünyanın en heyecan verici mimari uygulamalarından biri olan piazza san pietro (Aziz Petrus meydanı) karşılıyor. 284 traverten sütun, 88 gömme sütun ve 140 aziz heykelinin bulunduğu bu meydanı bernini 1656 ila 1667 yılları arasında, 11 yılda tamamlamıştır.
It is believed that Saint Peter whom the basilica is named after has its tomb around here. That’s why there is a statue of him with a key in his hand located at the top of the basilica. The reason why basilica is built in here and why there is a key in his hand comes from these verses written in Latin and located around the great dome designed by Michelangelo “And I tell you that you are Peter, and on this rock I will build my church, and the gates of Hades will not overcome it. And I will give unto thee the keys of the kingdom of heaven” Bible, Matthew 16:18-19. By the way, it’s good to indicate that Peter’s lexical meaning is “rock”.

Bazilika’ya ve meydana ismini veren aziz petrus’un mezarının burada olduğuna inanılıyor. bu yüzdendir ki bazilika’nın tepesinde elinde anahtar olan bir aziz petrus heykeli yer alıyor. bazilika’nın buraya yapılmasının ve petrus’un elindeki anahtarın sebebi ise Michelangelo’nun tasarladığı dev kubenin etrafında latince yazan şu ayetlerden geliyor. “sen petrus’sun ve ben topluluğumu bu kayanın üzerine kuracağım. ölüler diyarının kapıları ona karşı direnemeyecek. Göklerin egemenliğinin anahtarlarını sana vereceğim.” incil, matta 16:18-19. bu arada belirtmekte fayda var, petrus’un kelime anlamı “kaya”dır.
Basilica di San Pietro (St. Peter’s Basilica), which is the world’s biggest Catholic church is also located here. This basilica’s size which is accepted as a great success in every standards is really astonishing: it has 187 meters in length, 132 meters in height and 70.000 square meters in width. German thinker Goethe couldn’t keep his silence across the basilica’s majesty and while he was entering he said these words “It is as if entering the infinity”.

Dünyanın en büyük katolik kilisesi olan san pietro bazilikası da (aziz petrus kilisesi) bu meydanda yer alıyor. tüm standartlara göre muazzam bir başarı olarak kabul edilen bazilika’nın boyutları gerçekten de dudak uçurtacak ölçülerdedir: 187 metre uzunluğunda, 132 metre yüksekliğinde ve 70.000 m2 genişliğinde. alman düşünür goethe, bazilika’nın heybeti karşısında suskun kalamamış ve kapıdan girerken dudaklarından şu sözler dökülmüştür: “sanki sonsuzluğa girer gibi.”
Important artists such as Michelangelo, Maderno, Raffaello, Bramente, Domenico Fontana, Giuliano da Sangallo contributed their efforts on this basilica. All of these artists- of course under the supervision of Pope- added, removed or changed things in the basilica. While entering the door of the basilica, you are welcomed by terrifying embossments showing the tortures put to the first Christians. Everywhere is full of old popes’ statues who dominated people by using the power of religion for years. Basilica is so fascinating that visitors forget everything they know while looking at these statues, pictures and embossments.

Bu sanat adamlarından her biri -tabii ki papa’nın gözetiminde- bazilika’ya bir şey eklemiş, çıkarmış ya da değiştirmiştir. daha bazilikanın kapısından girerken ilk hıristiyanlara yapılan işkenceleri anlatan korkunç kabartmalar sizi karşılıyor. etraf, dinin gücünü kullanarak yıllarca insanlar üzerinde egemenlik kuran eski papaların heykelleriyle dolu. Bazilika o kadar büyüleyici bir yer ki ziyaretçiler buradaki heykellere, resimlere, kabartmalara bakarken bildiği her şeyi unutuveriyor.
Vatican is officially a free state but you don’t feel like you are entering a different state as there is no visa or passport check in the entrance. Until you meet the Swiss guards who are protecting Vatican. These guards who are wearing “interesting” uniforms that Michelangelo designed are faithfully continuing their duty of protecting Vatican, more precisely the Pope since 1506. Although these guards look like they came from the medieval tales as they are wearing those orange-red-blue uniforms, they are all actually chosen amongst the soldiers that completed their education in Swiss army and they are all swordsmen.

Kapısından içeri girdiğiniz için kendinizi başka bir devlete gitmiş gibi hissetmiyorsunuz. ta ki, Vatikan’ı koruyan isviçreli muhafızlarla karşılaşana kadar. Michelangelo’nun tasarladığı “ilginç” üniformalar içerisindeki muhafızlar 1506 yılından beri vatikan’ı daha doğrusu papa’yı koruma görevini sadakatle sürdürüyorlar. Muhafızlar turuncu-kırmızı-mavi üniformalarının içinde ortaçağ masallarından kopup gelmiş gibi gözükse de aslında hepsi isviçre ordusu’nda eğitimini tamamlamış askerlerden seçiliyor ve her biri gerçek birer kılıç ustası.
One of the most important works of art in Vatican is the statue called Pietà which is made by Michelangelo when he was 24. This statue which is attacked by a fan in 1972 is now protected in a bulletproof glass located on the right side of the basilica’s entrance. In this poignant statue which depicts Mary taking Christ descended from the cross on her lap, Mary looks quite young and beautiful and Christ looks quite handsome. For this statue in which Mary looks like a young lady, Michelangelo said: “Don’t you know that honorable women stay younger than the other women?” One of the reasons why Pietà is very special is that it is the only artwork on which Michelangelo put its sign. Rumor has it, the master heard that Pietà is made by an older and a skilled sculptor, not by a young and unknown one and he got so angry that at the same night he engraved his name on Mary’s waistband that passes through her chest.

Touring the Vatican museums is a quite tiring process both mentally and physically. But the Sistine Chapel that you will see after completing all these museums and galleries stretching for kilometers, will make you forget your fatigue and even all these artworks that you have just seen. Thanks to the ceiling that Michelangelo painted night and day all by himself for 4 years, Sistine Chapel is accepted as the pearl of Renaissance art and also one of the masterpieces of western art. Three stories of human beings that take place in the testament (Old Testament, psalm and the bible) is depicted on the ceiling. We can simply name these as the creation of Adam, the biblical flood and the final judgment. In the middle of the ceiling, “the god’s bestowing his hand on Adam to give him life” is depicted, which has become an artistic icon throughout the world. Yet, in order to see the actual majesty of the ceiling you have to look back again for the last time before going out. At that moment, with the effect of the wholeness, you will leave the chapel with a deep respect to Michelangelo.

Vatikan müzeleri’ni gezmek hem zihin olarak hem de beden olarak oldukça yorucu bir süreç. ancak bu kilometrelerce uzunluğundaki müzeler ve galeriler bittikten sonra karşılaşacağınız sistine şapeli size tüm yorgunluğunuzu hatta az önce gördüğünüz sanat eserlerini bile tümüyle unutturacak. üstat Michelangelo’nun 4 yıl geceli gündüzlü tek başına boyadığı tavan sayesinde, sistine şapeli rönesans sanatının incisi ve batı sanatının da başyapıtlarından biri olarak kabul edilir. tavanda insanın kutsal kitap’ta (tevrat, zebur ve incil) yer alan üç öyküsü betimlenmiştir. bunları kısaca “adem’in yaradılışı, nuh tufanı ve son yargı” olarak adlandırabiliriz. tavanın neredeyese ortasında ise tüm dünyada sanatsal bir ikon haline gelmiş olan “Tanrı’nın yaşam vermek için adem’e uzattığı el” yer alıyor. yine de tavanın asıl görkemini görmek için kapıdan çıkmadan hemen önce son bir kez geriye bakmalısınız. o zaman bütünün veridiği etkiyle michelangelo’ya derin bir saygı duyarak şapel’den ayrılacaksınız.
The Castel Sant’Angelo (Eng: Mausoleo di Adriano), for the Emperor Hadrian AD 130-139 progress payments between the years built a fortress in Rome. Fatih Sultan Mehmet Han’ın oğlu Cem Sultan da hapishanede mahkum edilenler arasında bulunmaktadır. Önceki papalar tarafından tehlike durumlarında korunma amaçlı buraya saklanılmıştır. Castel Sant’angelo’yu Vatikan’a bağlayan gizli alt geçit hala burada bulunmaktadır. Orta Çağ’da şehrin kuzey girişini korumak için kaleye dönüştürülmüştür
